Venezuela's Uncharted Path:
Challenges and Obstacles
Steve Ellner
Tuesday, 2008 July 22, 7:00 PM
37 Howe Street, New Haven
Until Hugo Chavez seriously challenged the status quo the U.S. government and corporations were quite content that most of the riches of Venezuela landed in the hands of the wealthy elite, here and there. Tens of millions of dollars to overthrow Chavez, including a reversed coup d'etat, and mountains of vitriolic rhetoric later the U.S. political and economic establishment continue to target the direction that Venezuela has taken.
Steve Ellner grew up in Oxford, CT, has taught history and political science at the Universidad de Oriente in Venezuela since 1977. His latest
book Rethinking Venezuelan Politics: Class, Conflict and the Chavez Phenomenon was released earlier this year. He writes regularly for
In These Times and has published on the Op-Ed Page of the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.
What's really happening in Venezuela?
How does Venezuela measure up regarding healthcare, education,
food?
In all of Latin America what is Venezuela's role in
resisting imperial domination?
Is President Hugo Chavez "anti-American?"
How democratic is the Bolivarian Revolution?
What do Venezuelan's think about the 2002 coup
overthrowing their President?

for change - let’s turn our country around!
|
|
The times are urgent and we must act. Too
much is too wrong in this country. We have a
foreign policy that is foreign to our core
values, and domestic policies wreaking havoc
at home. It’s time for a change.
• No more never-ending oil wars!
• Protect our civil liberties &
immigrant rights.
• End illegal spying, government corruption
and the subversion of our democracy.
• Rebuild our communities, starting with the
Gulf Coast. Stop corporate subsidies and tax
cuts for the wealthy while ignoring our basic
needs.
• Act quickly to address the climate crisis
and the accelerating destruction of our
environment.
|
| Our message to the White House
and to Congress is clear: either stand with us
or stand aside! We are coming together to
march, to vote, to speak out and to turn our
country around!

- Participate in a phone lobbying effort on that same day - call
your Congress member and Senators.
- A new political strategy for Iraq should include:
Set a Date for U.S. Withdrawal: The U.S. should name a date certain
for withdrawal of all U.S. military forces and bases.
- Negotiate an Iraqi National Compact: One key to ending the war in
Iraq is bringing nationalist resistance fighters back to the
negotiating table. All Iraqis must a have a stake in the peace
process.
- Convene a Regional Process for Stability in Iraq: Success in Iraq
will depend on the engagement of its neighbors-including Syria and
Iran-in planning and implementing a successful U.S. withdrawal and
the stabilization of Iraq.
- Underwriting Reconstruction with U.S. Dollars: U.S. military
forces and bases must leave Iraq, but the U.S. should not abandon
the Iraqi people. The U.S. should work with Iraqis and their
neighbors to establish a plan for U.S. financing of the
reconstruction of Iraq.

Remembering 3000 US Soldiers Killed in Iraq

A group of mourning citizens gathered on the New Haven Green
Monday to read the names of the 3,000 Americans killed in Iraq since the start
of the war.
It took three and a half hours to read the names. In a
symbolic statement of the reason for the gathering, a number if flag-draped
coffins were used to symbolize the toll the war was taking on the US military
and a number of black shrouded coffins were used to remember civilian casualties.
The mourners also read the names of a very abbreviated list
Iraqi civilians representing those who have been killed in the war.
The New Haven protest was just one of the many that took place
around the United States once the toll reach the 3000 milestone.

Speaking Appearance of
Retired Colonel Ann Wright, Anti-war Activist
and the Screening of the
Film Finding our Voices |
 |
| Ann Wright is one of three State Department officials to publicly
resign in advance of and to protest the Iraq invasion. A decorated Army
heroine; she became a career diplomat serving in many locations
including Kabul, Afghanistan, Micronesia, and former Soviet bloc
countries. After helping to evacuate 2500 persons from the civil war in
Sierra Leone, she received a heroism award. The reasons for her
resignation were that the US did not get UN Security Council approval to
invade Iraq, no effort was being made to solve the Palestinian problem
diplomatically, and that American civil liberties were being eroded.
Since leaving government service, she has worked with Cindy Sheehan to
set up Camp Casey outside the Bush ranch, testified on behalf of Lt.
Watada who refused to deploy to Iraq, and been arrested many times for
anti-war protests. Her book, Dissent: Voices of Conscience
profiles 25 government employees who have spoken out against the Iraq
War.
The film is a call to action for the American people and is narrated
by Martin Sheen. It demonstrates the importance of an individual taking
on the responsibility of fulfilling his civic duty by standing up for
what he believes, and chronicles the lives of a grieving grandmother,
three soldiers who served in Iraq, a peace activist, a diplomat, a
politician, and a minister, who took their anti-war activism to the
streets and made contributions to the greater good. It should be an
exciting evening!

Connecticut Voting
Rights Coalition
Dear Sisters &
Brothers:
We are inviting
you to a Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of
the Voting Rights Act, Wednesday, August 3rd,
2005 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 127, Yale Law
School, 127 Wall Street, New Haven.
This is not only
to mark the event, but to rally for the defense of
its enforcement provisions that will sunset
January 1, 2007. There are calls to do away
with those clauses preventing 16 designated States
from changing election laws or redistricting
without review by the Department of Justice or
Federal Court to prevent gerrymandering
eliminating minority representation; language
other than English requirements and Federal
investigation of voting complaints.
WE MUST COME
TOGETHER TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY!
We have not
forgotten the lynchings, the killings, the dogs,
the demonstrations, petitions and marches.
Just 40 years ago, after hundreds of years, the
right to vote for everyone was finally written
into legislation. Now after the elections of
2000 and 2004, still fresh in our minds, we cannot
allow an assault on the Voting Rights Act!
This is not isolated from all the issues:
jobs, housing, the environment, civil rights and
social security. It is cut from the same
cloth, all threads in the coat of democratic
rights.
We are a
coalition that has come together to work to make
sure our Congressional delegation, all seven, vote
to protect democracy. We are encouraging
other organizations and the community at large to
join us in our efforts to ensure that our right to
vote is not taken away.
Attached is more
information on the Voting Rights Act. For
more information, please call Roger Vann of the
ACLU of CT at (860) 247-9823, ext. 219. Or
log on to

We need you!
We urge your attendance! |

Danbury Unity
March
Sunday, June 12
2pm
Immigrants are bringing life back to Danbury. But
anti-immigrant forces, including Mayor Mark
Broughton and Congresswoman Nancy Johnson, intend
to intimidate immigrants, especially those from
Latin America.
In Danbury, those who play volleyball have become
the enemy. See news article below.
This is part of the national right-wing effort to
scapegoat immigrants for broad economic and social
problems for which they are not the cause but the
victims.
The Peace Council organized a peace contingent to
the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride rally in Queens
two years ago now is urging people to attend the
rally.
Contact us at 203-387-0370 for transportation
to Danbury from New Haven.

Goals
Why are we marching?
4 Goals
1- Because we want Governor Rell, Congresswoman
Johnson and Mayor Boughton to publicly retract the
call to deputize police
2- Because we want our government to recognize our
contribution to this community.
3- Because we want to live free of threats of
persecution
4- Because we want the community united by
solidarity and respect.
¿Por qué estamos marchando?
4 Puntos:
1- Porque queremos que el Gobernador Rell, la
Congresista Johnson y el Alcalde Boughton
retracten públicamente el llamado de la policía
para que actuén como agentes de inmigración.
2- Porque queremos que nuestro gobierno reconozca
nuestra contribución a esta comunidad.
3- Porque queremos vivir libres de amenazas de
persecución.
4- Porque queremos la comunidad unida por la
solidaridad y respeto.

SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2005

Public Invited
The paraphrase and quote above derive from Judge
Weeramantry's recent book Armageddon or
Brave New World? on the war on Iraq and
his impassioned dissent to the Court's
decision in the Case Concerning the
Illegality of Nuclear Weapons.
Judge Weeramantry is speaking in
several Northeast cities in advance of
the review of the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty taking place at
the UN in May. The United States
government and other nuclear signatories
are violating that Treaty's Article VI,
which calls for negotiations toward
complete nuclear disarmament. In support
of the Treaty, a Peace Train will
transport people from New Haven to a
major international antiwar and nuclear
disarmament rally in New York's Central
Park on May 1st.
The Judge is President of the
International Association of Lawyers
Against Nuclear Arms and founder of the
Weeramantry International Centre for
Peace, Education and Research, Colombo,
Sri Lanka. C. G Weeramantry was a Judge
of the International Court of Justice
from 1991 to 2000 and Vice-President of

Mother's
Day Candlelight Vigil on New Haven Green
Mother's
Day
7 pm, corner Elm and Temple.
Mother's Day is a Peace Day.
In the 1870's Julia Ward Howe's Proclamation called for a Mother's Day devoted to the advocacy of peace. In 2003, New Haven created a giant Mother's Day Peace Card filled with flowers for the mothers of Iraq and peace advocates displayed it on the Green. This year, the call for peace must be no less urgent. Bring flowers.

It is

As noted on the May

26th to May 7th, 2004, the governments
of the world will gather at the United
Nations to discuss the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty
(Non-Proliferation and Disarmament
Treaty - NP&DT). In the NP&DT,
the nuclear weapons states promised to
eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
Instead, the US hypocritically
manipulates the treaty as an excuse to
bomb or threaten other countries -
starting with Iraq, Iran, and North
Korea - said to be seeking nuclear
arms, while totally ignoring its own
promise to get rid of its massive
arsenal and adding new 'usable'
nuclear bombs."
"Let us

growing threat of nuclear war. It's

security for future generations."

streets to say YES to peace and NO to pre-emptive war and occupation.
Joining with growing numbers of military families and soldiers, we will call
for an end to the occupation of Iraq and Bush's militaristic foreign
policies. March 20 will be the first time the world's "other superpower" will
take center stage since Feb. 15.
