We also call upon the Global North states to reinstate their aid
to the UN Palestine Agency (UNRWA)
On January 26, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) released an order that found “plausible” evidence of genocide in Israel’s bombardment of the Palestinians of Gaza (paragraph 54). The ICJ, also known as the World Court, called upon Israel to “take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts” that are genocidal (paragraph 78).
The ICJ ruling cannot be appealed. Israel has been given a month to cease its genocidal war. Meanwhile, Algeria has asked the United Nations Security Council to enforce this order.
This order from the ICJ demands an end to the Israeli violence, including the withholding of humanitarian aid. Although not explicitly named, the order implicitly applies to the full complicity of the U.S. in the genocidal war against the people of Palestine.
The US Peace Council welcomes the ICJ order. We call upon the people of the U.S. to demand:
- That the U.S. government cease its support of this genocide. We support Defense for Children International in its case, brought to the federal court by the Center for Constitutional Rights, against the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
- That elected members of the federal and state legislatures intervene in the public domain and in their elected bodies to impel the Biden administration to cease its support of this genocide.
- That the U.S. government restart its funding for the UN Palestine agency (UNRWA), which – apart from other things – funds the education of half a million Palestinian children and funds the relief of all the residents of the Gaza Strip.
